Abstract:

The essential oils of two plants of the genus Bunium called the common name "Zireh" in Persian have been analyzed using GC, GC/MS and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The oils were subjected to antibacterial activity tests. The essential oils have been extracted using hydro-distillation method. The Oils were subjected to analytical GC and GC/MS. The components of the oils were identified using GC retention indices and mass spectra. Identification of the main components was confirmed by NMR spectral data. The oils were then subjected to antibacterial test against Bacillus subtilis by agar disk diffusion method. The oils were found to be rich in sesquiterpenoids such as garmacrene D and caryophyllene and phenyl propanoids e.g. myristicin and dill apiol. In this paper, we will compare the constituents of the oils of B. elegans and B. caroides. The results show that the oils have similar constituents and this indicates that the plants are taxonomically similar.

Zataria multiflora and Bunium persicum Essential Oils as Two Natural Antioxidants

Background: Autoxidation is considered to be the main route of edible oil deterioration, which produces undesirable odors and flavors (attributed to primary and secondary products of unsaturated fatty acids) during storage and heating. Objective: Antioxidant activities of Zataria multiflora (ZMEO) and Bunium persicum (BPEO) essential oils (EOs) in linseed oil (containing higher ω-3 in vegetab...

Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) films containing cellulose nanoparticle and Bunium persicum and Mentha pepperita essential oils (EOs)

BACKGROUND: Packaging is one of the important aspect of food quality and safety. Unfortunately, most of food packaging materials are from oil resources that are limited resources and undegradable. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was reaching an environmentally friendly packaging with enhancement safety of food. METHODS: After obtaining Bunium persicum (BP) and Mentha pepperita (MP) essential ...

Efficacy of the Bunium persicum (Boiss) Essential Oil against Acute Toxoplasmosis in Mice Model

BACKGROUND We evaluated the in vivo activity of Bunium persicum (Boiss) essential oil on infected mice with acute toxoplasmosis. METHODS To evaluate prophylactic effects, male NMRI mice received B. persicum essential oil at the concentrations of 0.05 and 0.1 mL/kg for 14 days. After 24 h mice were infected intraperitonealy with 1×10(4) tachyzoites of T. gondii, RH strain. In order to investig...

Inhibition of Staphylococcus Aureus on Hamburger by Chitosan Film Containing Nanoemulsion of Trachyspermum Ammi and Bunium Persicum Essential Oils

Antimicrobial agents such as essential oils have wide applications, and their use in edible films has been reported to enhance the shelf life of meat and its products. The present study aimed to assess the effects of chitosan films on the inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus  in hamburger samples in storage conditions (temperature: 4±1°C). The prepared films contained 0.8% nanoemulsion ...

Synergistic Effect of Zataria multiflora Boiss. and Bunium persicum (Boiss.) B. Fedtsch. Essential Oils on Linseed Oil Oxidative Stability

We studied the antioxidant activities of the essential oils of Zataria multiflora Boiss. (ZEO) and Bunium persicum (Boiss.) B. Fedtsch (BEO) in mixed form on linseed oil using (DPPH•), (ABTS•+), H2O2 scavenging, and reducing power assays. After calculation of IC50 for ZEO and BEO separately, interactions of the essential oils were investigated at the form of mixture and the results were given...
